"Kanha and Tigers make a great story" - Catman
Kanha National Park is nestled in the Maikal range of Satpuras in Madhya Pradesh, the heart of India that forms the central Indian highlands. The national park is being popularised as the Tiger Reserve and interestingly is being declared as one of the finest wildlife areas in the world. Spreading across two revenue districts the Mandala and the Kalaghat, Kanha National Park was declared a reserve forest in 1879 and revalued as a wildlife sanctuary in 1933. Its position was further upgraded to a national park in 1955.
Kanha is best known for its evergreen Sal forests, and is home to about 300 species of Birds, 43 species of Mammals, 26 species of Reptiles and more than 500 species of Insects. The Major species found are hard ground Barasingha, Tiger, Leopard, Dhole, Bear, Gaur, and Indian Python etc
Kanha Tiger Reserve has eight Zones, four are in the core area namely Kanha, Kisli, Mukki, and Sarhi, one in the adjoining Phen Sanctuary and three are in buffer areas of Tiger Reserve adjoining the core namely Khatia, Khapa and Sijhora. Khatia entrance gate falls in Mandla district and Mukki in Balaghat district of MP State. From the Khatia Entrance gate one can explore the Kisli, Kanha & Sarhi zones and the Mukki entrance gate covers the Mukki range of the national park.
The State animal of Madhya Pradesh - Hard Ground Barasingha is found exclusively in Kanha Tiger Reserve. Through a holistic conservation approach and effective management practices, the Tiger Reserve has seen a rise in the population of this symbolic deer species which was once on the verge of extinction from the Earth.
